Braunvieh was imported during the 1900's and the animals come from the Algau region in Germany and were imported by Mr. Woker in the Windhoek district. Later on animals were also imported from South Africa and were used in the northern part of Namibia for milk production to produce butter.
Our aim is to produce a dual purpose dual frame animal which is fertile and can walk for moderate distances to collect food and produce more milk than the calf need. That is why the Braunvieh can be used for milk production. We want to produce calves that weigh at least 50 % of the cows weight. We want to breed animals that are calm to work with, and produce therefore a higher quality of meat that is tender and has a good marbling. The Braunvieh has strong teeth and therefore has a long life span. Cows can easily be used for 12 years. The grey-brown hair of the Braunvieh gives the animal good protection against the cold winters and fall out in summer to give the animal a smooth shining coat.
Our mission to produce cattle which calf with ease, grow fast, are generally well adjusted, with well natured temperament and have above average meat and milk production. To make only the best performance available to the bull market, though selection and performance testing. To select animals that performs above average in regards to feed conversation and milk production. To enlarge the breed as the most effective breed for beef, milk and cross breeding production in Namibia. |
